I ran blindly down the sidewalk, crashing into strangers who hid their faces from the wet winds of winter. I heard a guy shout something, but the wind carried his words away. I think I hit some lady, I’m not too sure though. I felt a scratchy coat against my bare arms; warm from her body, but only for a second. Suddenly, my sneaker was drenched. I slowed and looked down at my feet, instantly feeling my hatred rise up my throat like the bile I retched when thinking of him. A glimmer of silver flashed across my ankle, reminding me of our second evening together. A warm, soothing tear fell from my eye, making it even harder to see against the blinding downpour.
“Why…?” I cried to myself, running headlong into cloaked figures rushing to escape the rain. “Why would he? WHY!” I shouted to the clouds, startling the passers by as I knelt into a puddle, ruining my once favourite jeans. My knees grew cold and numb, but I felt everyone watching me, felt their eyes penetrating my back like a window for viewing.
A girl came next to me, put her arm around my shaking shoulders and told me it would be all right. But it’ll never be all right, I heard my lips mutter, more to myself than to the woman. Then “IT WILL NEVER BE THE SAME!” The scream exploded from my mouth. The woman backed away. She was scared I would start shouting at her, I realized. I heard footsteps walking off, increasing speed with every stride they took.
The silence that followed kept every person I caught staring at me. I craved to yell at them all. Instead, I stood and ran, sprinting through the street.
Every face I saw, it was his. Any arm I glimpsed, I saw his trademark scar, encircling his forearm. I couldn’t help it, but all I could think about was him. I almost gagged at the thought. It was his fault that I was outside in the rain, freezing, as the wind blew against my back, pushing me onwards. My face felt heavy, eyeing the concrete ground beneath me, taking in minor details. So, I looked up.
And there he was. On the other side of the crossing, searching for someone.
I threw my head down, causing something to crack from the sudden movement.
“Oh great!” I moaned, stuffing my frozen hands into the pockets of my jacket. “Wait…” He hasn’t seen me yet. Maybe, if I could leave before he does see me, I might be able t-SCREEEEEECH!!………My train of thought had been broken.
I looked up again, fearful of what I might see.
I screamed.
Not from fear, from hatred, nor grief. I screamed, because my nightmares and dreams had become my new reality.

The problem was, he had seen her standing across from him. He noticed her instantly. He had wanted to tell her, that he was sorry. Had wanted to give her the one thing that only she would understand: his golden bracelet, the match to her silver anklet. And even though the little man was flashing red, he crossed the traffic-strewn road. He dodged some cars, but fate knew he couldn’t dodge them all.

As he lay there, slowly drifting from this world, the cars around him didn’t stop. The drivers hadn’t seen anything. They roared past him, cutting him off from any aid the witnesses could provide.
One girl, her jeans wet and muddy at the knees, her eyes puffy from crying, a silver anklet clasped to her chest, had tried to help. As she’d ran to the roadside, a quick young man saw and grabbed her, saving at least one life. She shouted, bit and scratched at the man, but he held on, telling her to calm down. She broke down in his arms, sobbing into his chest. He handed her to a nearby woman, not much older than himself, and went out to the middle of the road.
The cars had finally stopped speeding past, realizing what had happened. Seeing a young man stooped over in the street, a few left their cars to accompany him; some withdrew their cell phones and dialled the emergency number for an ambulance.
The girl, weeping quietly in the arms of a stranger, saw the look on their faces as they moved away. Her horror intensified, the anger inside ebbing. She broke away, pushing past the wall of bodies, desperate to see him.
As one man moved away, disturbed by his surroundings, she moved, hesitantly, forward. Struggling, she managed to reach him in the middle of the street. She knelt down and placed his head upon her lap. Stroking his soft-brown hair away from his closing eyes, she saw a movement in his hand. Reaching out, a sliver of gold chain fell from his slackened grip, causing the girl to stop suddenly.
Whimpering could be heard escaping her lips.
She peered into his face, questioning his unseeing gaze and asked herself the same thing: Why? She wanted to ask him so many things; unanswered questions overflowed her mind as rainwater poured relentlessly down the brimming drains.
Too stunned to think, she uttered one word, meaning all the world to her and him. Only one soul was listening, the one she held, begging him back.
Cupping his face with muddy hands, she felt him draw his last breath. The shudder of his shoulders slowed as his life faded, bringing about a surge of tears from the one cradling his now lifeless body.
